Michael S. Pauley is an attorney, a soldier, and a relic of the Cold War era. His 34 years of military affiliation, serving in all three components of the United States Army, allowed him to serve or live in many of the locations mentioned in his books. The concept was to take an old soldier, and thrust him into a situation where he would have to evolve into a professional who could not just think tactically, but also strategically. Many of the leadership principles, geopolitical considerations, and strategies followed in the book were honed by years of personal study, in areas such as Military History, officer professional development programs, and the study of international law. These concepts, coupled with personal knowledge of the inner workings of the Continuity of Government plan, allowed him the insight to create a work as realistic as possible for the genre.
